THE STEEL CURTAIN

Bookmark and Share
Wednesday, April 8, 2009

After last season's bitter loss to the Raiders in the AFC Championship a 7-0 start meant nothihng if the Steelers did not make it to the Super Bowl.  Gone were the colors of the Jaguars that they had once worn.  To a cease were the agonizing contract negotians among star players.  A new team name.  Finally did the Steelers posses the leadership needed to take them over the Roar of the Mighty Panthers?Yes, these were all the challenges Head Coach Todd Levine had to cope with.  After losing his offensive coordinator, Coach Levine had to re-access his offensive arsenal and devise a plan of attack.  The coaching staff turnaround at the start of the season proved to give new light and direction.  With the addition of Defensive guru Jaime Gomez now on board, the Steel curtain was starting to take shape ranking 2nd in the entire Pee Wee Division.  The offense went back to its simplified yet effective means, being 1 touchdown shy of breaking 200 points for the season.  This was enough to rank them first in the Pee Wees!

In the AFC Championship they met a rookie team that played like veterans in the Jets. Winning 28-12, the Steelers now had their final hump to surpass.  They were to face the defending Super Bowl Champion, Panthers.  Though they had beaten them in the regular season, many thought the Panther poise would overwhelm the Steeler attack.  The game changed leads many times.  With time running down, and the Steelers trailing, the Steelers orchestrated one of the most beautiful drives in NFL Flag Football History at the PJCC.  With a mix of short passes, the Steelers drove to the Panthers 5 yard line.  Then with just over a minute to play, Steeler QB Noah Engel found Jaime Gomez in the endzone for the winning score!  Leading 26-24, the Steel Curtain closed down on the Panthers as the clock ran out.  The Steelers had found vindication through their coaches, team leadership and poise.  Congratualtions to Coaches Todd Levine, Jaime Gomez and the STEELERS!

Note: The Steelers look to reunite and return as they move up to the Jr. Division next season!
